Tree & shrub recycling for Bonsai
Thinking of removing overgrown shrubs hedge plants or trees from your property?
Did you know that some of those plants could be given a new lease of life or chance of survival as a Bonsai?
If you have any of these species on your hit list before you get it cut down & thrown on the fire or tipped at the landfill, consider calling us to see if it could be recycled.
Even plants with quite thick trunks can be re-cultivated as bonsai with the right skills and techniques applied to them.
If you’re going to remove any of these trees we may offer a discount to the cost of the removal job by the agreed value of your recycled plant. Or maybe you would like us to give you an estimate for turning the plant into a bonsai for your garden!
There is always some risk of trees being lifted from the ground and not surviving in a pot, but if it was going to the tip anyway, what is there to lose?
This can work with the following common garden species of plant or shrub.
Juniper’s
Hollywood Juniper – Juniperus chinensis “Kaizuka” a popular tree often seen spiralling above other trees in a garden (pictured below).

Dwarf Procumbens Juniper – Juniperus procumbens ‘Nana’

Most other species of Juniper are also potential candidates for recycling as Bonsai.
Olive trees
Olive trees make great Bonsai subjects and even quite large trees can be quite happy in a potted up environment as they are very hardy
Box hedging
Large overgrown box hedging can be converted into quite good bonsai trees
Box Honeysuckle
Especially when old and overgrown, these can make excellent old looking bonsai trees

Other conifers
Swamp Cypress, Yew, Cedars, some Pines and Cypress can make nice Bonsai
Other broadleaf trees/shrubs
Hawthorn, Japanese Maples, Elms, Beech
NZ Natives
Totara & Titoki

Q: What type/size plants are good?
At least 10cm thick trunks at ground level, up to as large as 30cm thick.
Not sure? Give us a ring anyway and we’ll give you a fair appraisal.
Q: What is the process?
We’ll come and look at your plant and give you an appraisal on whether it is an opportunity, give you a value and deduct that value form the cost of the removal work.
We would then carry out the removal work, chip all of the branches, leave all the wood chip on site for you to use as garden mulch or take it away.
